Cautions

Direct bilirubin results are falsely decreased in the presence of hemolysis. In some cases of monoclonal gammopathies (especially Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia with very high concentrations of IgM), direct bilirubin results may be unreliable. Direct bilirubin results may be falsely low in the presence of high concentrations of N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (metabolite of Acetaminophen).
