Test Code LABYFCALP Calprotectin, Stool
Clinical Information
Fecal calprotectin is a quantitative stool test that serves as a noninvasive marker of intestinal mucosal inflammation. Calprotectin is a calcium- and zinc-binding protein released by neutrophils during inflammatory processes in the gastrointestinal tract. Elevated fecal calprotectin reflects neutrophilic inflammation and is commonly seen in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
This assay is used as an aid in the evaluation of patients with gastrointestinal symptoms, particularly to help differentiate IBD from functional disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Fecal calprotectin testing may reduce unnecessary endoscopic procedures when used appropriately in conjunction with clinical assessment.
