Test Code ORGANOXBLDGAS Blood Gas, Perfusate
Clinical Information
This panel is intended only for testing perfusate from isolated ex vivo organs intended for transplantation. It is not intended for whole-blood specimens, other patient or donor specimens, or donor-suitability testing. Testing of organ perfusate for this purpose is not subject to CLIA under CMS memorandum QSO-25-18-CLIA.
Synonym

Interpretation
Reference intervals and clinical decision limits have not been established for organ perfusate. Results should not be interpreted using whole-blood reference intervals and should be evaluated according to the organ type, perfusion solution and conditions, collection time point, and the transplant program’s established protocol.
Cautions
Contamination of samples with ambient air will drive the pO2 to equilibrate with ambient air (150 mmHg) leading to falsely low or falsely elevated results depending on the initial pO2 level; as well as falsely decrease the pCO2; and falsely increase the pH, which will also affect the portion of calcium bound to protein. Therefore, care should be taken to expel all air bubbles from all blood gas samples.
Syringes that are not completely filled will have increased heparin concentrations that can lead to erroneous measurements of pO2, pCO2, sodium, potassium, and ionized calcium.
Potassium results are elevated with in vitro hemolysis. Hemolysis may be undetected in certain whole blood potassium measurements. Interpret results with caution.
Method Description
pO2, Glucose, Lactate: Amperometry
pH, pCO2, K: Potentiometry
HCO3: Log (HCO₃ (c)) = pH + log(pCO₂) – 7.608 mmol/L
tHgb: Oximetry
