Clinical Information

This test is used to detect the presence of ethanol in urine. Detection of ethanol in urine indicates recent exposure to ethanol but cannot be used to determine the amount of ethanol ingested.

Specimen Collection Information

Use a non-alcohol based cleanser to clean the collection site. Fill urine container as much as possible to avoid risk of evaporation.

Interpretation

Detectable ethanol in urine indicates exposure to ethanol within the past 8-12 hours. 

Cautions

Ethanol may be detected in urine due to fermentation post-sample collection in the presence of glucose and bacteria.
