Test Code XM Type and Screen

Clinical Information

This ABO and Rh(D) blood typing test identifies the presence of specific red cell antigens and antibodies to determine the ABO/Rh(D) type.

The antibody screen is used for the detection of allo- or autoantibodies directed against red blood cell antigens. Transfusion and pregnancy are the primary means of sensistation to red cell antigens. In a given population, 2-4% of the general population have antibodies directed against red blood cell antigens. These antibodies may cause hemolytic disease of the newborn or hemolysis of transfused red blood cells.
