Clinical Information
This test is intended to screen for the presence of ethyl glucuronide in urine. Results are reported as 'presumptive positive' and are not confirmed.
Synonym
- ETG
Specimen Required
Preferred Container/Tube: Urine Container Cup
Acceptable Container/Tube: Urine Container Cup, Urine
Specimen Minimum Volume: 1 mL

Refrigerated: 7 days
Rejected Due To
- Quantity not sufficient
- Urine Tubes with preservative
Reference Values
None Detected
Cutoff concentration by immunoassay detection:
500 ng/mL
Interpretation
Presumptive positive results may indicate the presence of ethyl glucuronide (EtG), a direct ethanol metabolite, in the urine sample. EtG can be detected up to several days even after complete elimination of alcohol from the body. Negative results may reflect the absence of EtG, or EtG present below the assay's limit of detection. Urine concentrations can vary extensively with fluid intake and other biological variables.
Cautions
Urine samples should not include boric acid preservatives. Exposure to ethanol by other means such as hand sanitizers may cause a false positive result.
